VIMIOSO

Vimioso is a municipality in northeastern Portugal, part of the Trás-os-Montes intermunicipal community located in the Bragança district, near the Spanish border. Its historical heritage blends harmoniously with its hilly landscapes, interspersed with rivers and steep banks, offering a wide range of outdoor activities. The Vimioso Town Hall is the historical partner of the Confluences & Borders project, as it was after a discussion in 2022 between Manuel de Lima, president of INTER+VALUE, and Jorge Fidalgo, mayor of Vimioso, that the project was created, leading to its first major event: the Intercultural, Cross-Border, and International Biennale of Vimioso.

The Vimioso Town Hall plays a crucial role in supporting and funding the Biennial and various activities, creations, and productions, ensuring their realization and dissemination beyond its territory. By assuming this pioneering role, it demonstrates its commitment to the cultural and artistic development of the region and its desire to ensure their widespread diffusion. In addition to financial resources, the Vimioso Town Hall provides logistical and organizational support, contributing to the success of the event and related actions. Its active involvement and investment in the 1st Biennial had a catalytic effect on other partners who, after attending or collaborating in the organization of the event, were convinced of the positive impact of such a project on the local community and decided to get involved in organizing similar events in their own territories.

Events

The first local event related to the Confluences & Frontiers project was the realization, in August 2022, of an exhibition of works by photographer Eduardo Perez entitled Trás-os-Montes. The following year, in the spring, Chilean mural artists Jotapé and Allan Halley created a series of murals in the heart of the town. In the fall of 2023, organized by INTER+VALUE and the Vimioso Town Hall, the first major event of Confluences & Frontiers took place over eight days under the name of the 1st Intercultural, Cross-border, and European Biennial of Vimioso. Various productions were created on this occasion (paintings, jewelry, albums, videos...). The dates for the 2nd Biennial are already scheduled: it will take place at the end of April 2025.

Meeting of Philharmonic Orchestras

2023-09-30 - Vimioso

The fourth evening of the 2023 Vimioso Biennale was animated by the encounter of two orchestras: A Lira (The Lyre) from Ribadavia (Galicia, Spain), which traveled 275 km from its hometown to perform in Vimioso, and the Banda Filarmónica de Bragança (Philharmonic Orchestra of Bragança), coming from the district capital located about fifty kilometers away. The two orchestras took turns playing various well-known musical pieces, captivating the large audience composed of Galicians and Portuguese who came to admire and support them. Starting off quietly, they gradually stirred increasing enthusiasm among the audience before culminating in a grand finale. The final piece, played in unison by both philharmonics under the expert direction of their conductors, was reprised, requested again, and received standing ovations from a thoroughly captivated audience.
